Just in Chime

They’re tall, they’re stately, and they’re right on time.

Ridgeway grandfather clocks at near or below wholesale prices are available at FindersKeepers, a furniture outlet that sells close-outs, discontinued pieces, overruns, one-of-a-kind and mis-shipped items from Eastern manufacturers.

The Ridgeway moon-dial clock (from about $1,099) is just one of the many items FindersKeepers features. Most of the clocks stand 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 feet tall and have only slight damage or imperfections that can be repaired by the staff.

Linda Weiss and Dave Marks saw the potential for an individual furniture outlet that sells designer quality items--for less than half or a third of the original price--several years ago when they owned a traditional retail furniture business.

Weiss and Marks, who are siblings, decided to open FindersKeepers about four years ago and now have stores in Fullerton and in Tustin Market Place.

Among furnishings carried are entertainment centers, curio cabinets and sleigh beds by manufacturers such as Lexington, Pulaski, Universal, Lane, Broyhill, Kincaid, Southern, Bernhardt and Drexel Heritage.

The selections change weekly. FindersKeepers cannot take special orders. Delivery is available.

In the Bag

Taking your home away from home is easier now with the Czech plumber’s bag, which was featured in the recent Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning documentary film “Kolya.”

The bag, new to the U.S. market, has been manufactured in the Czech Republic for at least 50 years. Its original use was for plumbers to carry tools, but its simple lines and versatility make it an ideal choice for many uses.

Imported by Minneapolis-based Bohemian Traders, the leather bag is reinforced by a steel band extended under the handles. It is riveted at all stress points and has an inner partition.

“The bag will stand on its own; it will not bend,” says Paulette Will, a spokeswoman for Bohemian Traders. “It’s fashion that’s here to do the job.”

The bag comes in two sizes--letter (14 1/2 inches by 11 inches by 6 inches) and legal (16 1/2 inches by 11 inches by 6 inches)--and two thicknesses, heavy and extra heavy.

The heavy letter and legal bags cost $109 each plus shipping and handling; the extra heavy letter and legal bags are $129 and $139, respectively, plus shipping and handling.

Blade Runner

If your old lawn mower just can’t cut it, the Murray 20-inch rear bagger, a walk-behind machine that features an integrated mulch plug and discharge chute, could give you an edge.

Integrating these parts eliminates the need for extra accessories and tools, which saves time and simplifies mowing.

“To convert from bagging to mulching, simply remove the bag, close the E-Z seal mulch plug and begin,” says Steve Richman, vice president of sales and marketing at Murray. “This is the perfect mower for densely populated suburban neighborhoods and for the growing segment of aging baby boomers and female users.”

The rear baggers (from $179 to $317) have front-wheel drive for positive traction and easy turning, an electric starter and a Briggs & Stratton engine that eliminates stalling in heavy cutting conditions.

The mowers are available at Wal-Mart and Home Depot stores throughout the county. Call (800) 251-8007 for more information.
