Weld Says He’ll Take Ambassador Post
Massachusetts Gov. William F. Weld said he has been offered the job as U.S. ambassador to Mexico and will accept. Weld said he was told by national security advisor Sandy Berger that he would be nominated for the job. The post would preclude him from participating in politics for at least the next few years, including the 2000 presidential race, the Republican governor said. Weld, 51, said if this job possibility had not appeared, he probably would have run for a third term as governor in 1998. President Clinton is expected to formally nominate Weld this week.
