Missionary Motives
The article by C.M. Mayo on Baja California (“Old California, Missions and Murals,” April 6) says the Jesuit protocol was to cook pots of gruel to attract people to catechism. My experience is the opposite. Those who travel long distances to be with people in need provide food and health care because that is what the residents need. Missionaries express their love in action, often at personal sacrifice.
