‘Like Water for Chocolate’

The most popular foreign film of all time is writer Laura Esquivel’s 1992 adaptation of her century-spanning period novel. Directed by her then-husband, well-known actor Alfonso Arau, the film is a 10-course feast of magic realism: a rapt tale of a cursed upper-class Mexican family whose sexual repressions are exorcised in sumptuous banquets, while lovers wait a lifetime.
