Tickled, Concerned by ‘Doonesbury’ Wit

Share

As first-year law students at Boalt Hall, we feel honored that Garry Trudeau has set a week of “Doonesbury” at our school. More importantly, we applaud his efforts to bring national attention to the lack of diversity here.

However, through his casual inclusion of the punch line, “Well, we no longer admit black people” (Oct. 21), Trudeau promotes a dangerous myth about Boalt.

The school did admit 14 black people this year. In addition to increasing this number, we must encourage such students to matriculate. We are working with our classmates to attract minority applicants to UC Berkeley, both for transfer and for next year’s entering class. We can only hope that the success of our efforts has not been jeopardized by Garry Trudeau’s wit.
