Grant 40, Verdugo Hills 0--David Smith rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns in 16 carries and Duriel Carter had 111 yards and two touchdowns in 10 carries to lead the Lancers at Grant.

Quarterback Lawrence Monroy, who passed for 1,512 yards last year, completed six of eight for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Behind the running of Smith and Carter, the Lancers took a 34-0 halftime lead. Verdugo Hills was held to four yards in the first half.

Smith and Carter scored all of their touchdowns in the first half, beginning with Carter’s 40-yard run on Grant’s first possession.

Grant outgained Verdugo Hills, 369-89, and finished with 285 yards rushing.
