LAUSD Special Ed
Your April 15 editorial, “School Unity, Yes; Now to Basics,” fails to address the fact that the Special Education Commission crosses all racial, ethnic and religious lines in serving the needs of special-needs students in the Los Angeles Unified School District. As far as I know, the Special Education Commission does not fall under the auspices of Prop. 209, and in light of the mess that LAUSD has made in its horrendous attempt to comply with the Chanda Smith decree, it seems obvious that the board has acted irresponsibly and in haste in eliminating a much-needed advisory board.
In order for the new commission “to help all students” the mere volume of issues that will need to be addressed will leave the special-needs students on the back burner once again. If I recall correctly, isn’t that why the district was sued by Chanda Smith, et al.?
