Republican Brooks Firestone won’t seek reelection to a third term in the California Assembly, a move that leaves the 35th District seat up for grabs in the June primary.

Firestone, 61, announced that he won’t run again for the seat representing Santa Barbara County and part of Ventura County.

“It was not an easy decision. I feel I have done what I set out to do. Now it’s time to give others a chance,” Firestone said.

Firestone lost a tough primary fight this month to fill the 22nd Congressional District seat left vacant by the death of Rep. Walter Capps. Firestone finished behind Tom Bordonaro in the Republican balloting. Bordonaro faces Democrat Lois Capps in the March 10 runoff.

Firestone did not rule out a later bid for public office.
