Man Pleads Not Guilty in Hot Dog Stand Death
A Panorama City man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that he stabbed to death a 20-year-old man at a hot dog stand in Valley Village last month, authorities said.
Edgar Barrientos, 20, was arraigned in Van Nuys Municipal Court on one count of murder, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Larry Diamond. He was being held in Los Angeles County Jail on $1,020,000 bail. A preliminary hearing for Barrientos has been set for July 6.
Barrientos is accused of stabbing to death Steven Cory Redden of North Hollywood on May 10 outside a hot dog stand in the 5100 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard.
The stabbing was not gang-related, as first believed, Diamond said, but grew out of an argument between a 17-year-old friend of Redden’s and Barrientos’ brother.
The details of the fight were unclear, but at some point, Barrientos and Redden began fighting, Diamond said.
Redden allegedly was armed with a beer bottle and Barrientos with a knife. Barrientos stabbed Redden in the chest, Diamond said.
Redden ran across the street and collapsed in front of a gas station on the southeast corner of Magnolia and Laurel Canyon boulevards. He was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
