3 From Esperanza Win Journalism Contest

Three members of the Esperanza High School student publication won top rankings in the regional Orange County Journalism Education Assn. competition, qualifying them to advance to the state finals.

Alex Douvas, 17, editor in chief; Chris Kamen, 18, sports editor; and Jason Weinger, 17, staff reporter, will compete against other regional finalists on May 9 at Torrance’s El Camino College.

Competitors attend mock news conferences, sporting events or interviews and are given an hour to write their stories. Professional journalists judge the stories on accuracy, style and quality of writing.
