USC Coach Paul Hackett is beginning to consider how possible heavy rains associated with Hurricane Georges would affect the Florida State game Saturday in Tallahassee.

“I guess we’ll have have to start talking about our rain game plan,” he said, though he added he wouldn’t change the whole approach, but perhaps try to run between the tackles more and be aware that it’s harder for either team to mount a pass rush.

“Slipping and sliding is the thing,” he said. “Plays are made that wouldn’t normally be made. Games sometimes turn on something like that--either way.”

Unsure footing could negate players’ speed somewhat, but Hackett doesn’t see that as an advantage because both teams have a lot of speed.

A big bruising running back might have an advantage, but USC’s Chad Morton and Florida State’s Travis Minor are both quick, darting runners.

“The question is whether they’ll be able to keep their footing,” Hackett said.

It might amount to no clear advantage--except perhaps if some of the fans stay home.

“I don’t know whether they’re fanatical enough to go in the pouring rain,” Hackett said. “It might depend if they allow umbrellas, or you have to take garbage bags. The only thing I’ll watch from under a garbage bag is a rock concert.”

Three seniors expected to start on defense this season are back from injuries--linebacker Mark Cusano, safety Grant Pearsall and defensive end Lawrence Larry--but Hackett said they won’t start their first game back. “I think they’ll all play a lot. They’ll all have a chance the next couple of weeks to earn their spots back.” . . . Tight end Antoine Harris missed practice to undergo tests on his injured right ankle, but Hackett says he might be available for the game.
