Compromise

* It’s Jan. 1, 2000! No, it’s Jan. 1, 2001! The debate regarding the start of the millennium must stop. The 2000 people will never convert the 2001 people, and vice versa. Divided into separate camps, they will continue to bore us with long letters to the editor “proving” each other wrong all the way to Jan. 1, 2001. All the while the 2000 people will insist, “It’s already here!” and the 2001 people will demand, “It’s coming! It’s coming!”

I propose a compromise. Let everyone agree that July 1, 2000, is the official starting date of the new millennium.
