Sprint Expands E-Mail

Sprint PCS, the wireless-telephone unit of Sprint Corp., said it will offer business users access to corporate e-mail and internal computer networks over its phones to lure more high-spending customers. The Sprint PCS Wireless Web for Business follows introduction of a similar service for consumers last August. The business version offers wireless Internet connections that are about four times faster, with additional security features. Sprint is working with IBM Corp.’s Lotus Development Corp. unit, the Wireless Knowledge venture of Qualcomm Inc. and Microsoft Corp., Siebel Systems Inc., Sabre Holdings Corp. and PeopleSoft Inc. to deliver the new services, which will be available next month. In addition to e-mail, users will have wireless access to customer account information and flight and travel schedules. Shares of Kansas City, Mo.-based Sprint PCS fell $1.13 to close at $47.88 and Westwood, Kan.-based Sprint, the No. 3 U.S. long-distance company, fell 38 cents to close at $30.88, both on the New York Stock Exchange.
