Conexant Systems Inc. will be the exclusive supplier of modem technology to Nintendo Co. Ltd. for the Japanese firm’s next video game console, the two companies said Wednesday.

Terms of the deal were not released.

Conexant, a Newport Beach maker of high-speed communications chips, will provide 56-kilobits-per-second dial-up technology for the new game platform, allowing Nintendo game users to connect to the Internet and to other players.

Conexant also will collaborate with Nintendo on future broadband capabilities for Nintendo’s game consoles. The upcoming Nintendo platform, “Project Dolphin,” will be released in 2001.
