Businesses Evacuated After Work Crews Hit Gas Line
Several businesses were evacuated Wednesday after crews digging a 30-foot trench for the Alameda Corridor project hit a gas line, causing a major leak, police said.
There were no reported injuries or damage to surrounding businesses caused by the leak, near the corner of Alameda Street and Slauson Avenue, said Huntington Park police Lt. Steve Peeler. The leak was reported at 2:20 p.m. and was stopped by 5 p.m.
The 10-mile-long trench is a vital element of the $2.4-billion high-speed railway that will move cargo from the harbor to rail hubs near downtown Los Angeles, where trains can connect with markets across the country.
Until now, construction of the trench has been free of any major accidents. But the work has caused daily traffic headaches and complaints from adjoining business owners about noise, dust and vibrations.
The project is expected to be completed in April 2002.
