The Laguna Beach County Water District recently decided to prepare for litigation in the event it decides to rescind a merger agreement with the city.

The five-member water board, which unanimously approved arranging for a lawsuit at its Tuesday meeting, is considering setting aside the planned Nov. 1 merger but has not taken a public stand on the proposal.

“If this board does decide to dissolve the shotgun marriage, it will have all the appropriate papers ready to go to court,” said board member Susan M. Trager, a lawyer who was appointed to her water district post this month. The board wants to maintain local control and protect the district’s assets, Trager added.

City Council members Kathleen Blackburn and Paul Freeman attended the meeting and said they support the merger agreement, as do their council colleagues.
