Brooks Says He Will Transfer From Fullerton

Keith Brooks, a freshman forward on the Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball team, said Monday he is planning to transfer.

“I didn’t fit in with the style of play they ran,” Brooks said. “I had a good relationship with the coaches, but it came down to the playing style.”

Brooks, regarded as one of the top recruits in Coach Donny Daniels’ first class, said he favors a less deliberate style.

Brooks has been sidelined for more than a month because of a back injury and has not played this season for a team that is 1-6 after losing to Baylor by 30 points Saturday.

Brooks, 6 feet 7 and 250 pounds, said he is considering Loyola Marymount and Washington State, but might consider other schools.

“I’d like to make a decision in the next few days,” Brooks said. He said he would like to be at the new school for the second semester, if possible.

“We want to wish him the best, and we’re sorry it didn’t work out,” Daniels said.

Brooks averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Compton Dominguez High team that won the Division II state championship last season. He was selected to the All-Southern Section first team in the division and was a two-time most valuable player in the San Gabriel Valley League.

The Titans are off to their worst start since the 1995-96 team started 1-8. Fullerton plays its next two games on the road, at Eastern Kentucky Wednesday and at Valparaiso (Ind.) on Friday.
