Hearing on Abuse Charges Set Against Monrovia Mayor

A hearing on domestic violence charges against Monrovia Mayor Robert T. Bartlett has been set for June 20.

Bartlett, known as “Mr. Monrovia,” faces felony charges for allegedly abducting and physically abusing his girlfriend, Monica Godfrey, who was seven months pregnant, before threatening to throw her from a bridge. The mid-April incident allegedly began at a San Bernardino residence.

Godfrey, 35, had bruises on her arm and swelling of the face consistent with being struck by someone, police said. Bartlett was released on bail after pleading not guilty to felony counts of making terrorist threats, battery of a cohabitant and false imprisonment.

Godfrey, the mother of Bartlett’s 4-year-old son, also made domestic violence allegations in obtaining a restraining order against the mayor last year.

Bartlett has hired attorney Grover Porter of San Bernardino to defend him. The mayor agreed to waive his right to a speedy trial to allow for the new hearing.

When asked to give his version of events, Bartlett said he “wouldn’t be saying anything until the trial.” Previously, he has said the allegations, including those made during the recent arrest, were part of an “extortion plot.”

On April 20, Bartlett filed a report with Monrovia police accusing Godfrey of forgery and grand theft against him. The Monrovia force referred the matter to the district attorney’s office for investigation.
