Fijian President Fires Government
Fijian President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara said today that he had fired the country’s democratically elected government and would appoint a new caretaker administration by Monday.
Mara also said rebel leader George Speight and six gunmen who stormed Parliament May 19 would likely be granted immunity from prosecution for their roles in the coup attempt.
The move came just hours after a gunfight broke out between soldiers and rebels at a roadblock outside Parliament in which two soldiers and a journalist were injured.
The gunmen took Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and other officials hostage during their takeover of Parliament.
