Unionists Face Showdown Vote

Protestant unionist leader David Trimble said he would confront his party critics in a make-or-break moment for Northern Ireland’s 1998 peace accord. Trimble’s badly divided party will vote today on whether to resume a historic Protestant-Catholic power-sharing coalition in the British province. Trimble must persuade a majority to back the resumption of power-sharing, or Britain cannot follow through on a planned power transfer Monday to local hands.
