Drive Set to Register More Latino Voters
A drive to register Latino voters for the presidential election will be held Saturday at Ritchie Valens Recreation Center.
The event, coordinated by community leaders, is sponsored by the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, which works to bring more Latinos into politics and over the years has registered millions of voters throughout the U.S.
“We have seen recent attacks against the Latino community, exemplified by Propositions 187 and 209,” said Jose Luis Ramirez, a counselor at Mission College who is coordinating the drive.
“If the Latino community had not reacted, provisions in these pieces of legislation would have denied our children access to public education and many health and social services that others take for granted.”
He added, however, that Latinos are not yet in a position to relax.
“We must continue to increase our strength to ensure that our children reap the full benefits of the American dream.”
Organizers hope to register 1,000 to 1,500 voters during the drive, which features music and food and runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the center, 10736 Laurel Canyon Blvd.
