Wrong Set of Remains From Jet Crash Buried
Authorities said a clerical error caused the wrong set of remains from the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 to be buried in the Dominican Republic.
Luz Maria Lendof, 63, and her husband were flying to visit relatives in the Dominican Republic when the flight crashed shortly after takeoff in New York on Nov. 12.
The New York City medical examiner’s office determined that the remains originally identified as Lendof’s and given to her family for burial actually belonged to another unnamed victim.
An office spokeswoman said Lendof’s remains were labeled “DQ 587” and the other victim’s were marked “DQ 578.”
