Intel Corp. said it would buy closely held VxTel Inc. for about $550 million in cash. Fremont, Calif.-based VxTel makes digital signal processors that enable communications companies to send voice and data via packet-based networks. Digital signal processors, or DSPs, are among the fastest-growing part of the semiconductor market, even with the current economic slowdown and flagging demand. Shares of Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel, the leading maker of computer chips, closed down 44 cents at $29.50 on Nasdaq.
