12-Year-Old Buried in Sand Dies of Injuries
A 12-year-old boy seriously injured after a beach sand tunnel he was digging collapsed and trapped him without air has died.
Michael Newell of Cameron Park died at 2:20 p.m. Sunday at Children’s Hospital Oakland. Michael’s family said his organs were being harvested for donation to help other children.
Beach-goers dug out the unconscious boy, who had been playing around the dunes near Dillon Beach Friday. The beach is about 60 miles northwest of San Francisco.
“He was completely buried for five to six minutes,” said paramedic Capt. Ron Alves of the Marin County Fire Department.
