Re “Government’s Microsoft Case Challenged,” Feb. 27:

Judge A. Raymond Randolph of the U.S. Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia, when drilling the government’s lawyers during oral arguments regarding Microsoft/Windows, used the following analogy: “It’s almost like you’re saying, ‘I’d like to buy a clock radio without a clock.’ ” The real analogy is that consumers (and computer manufacturers) want to buy (or offer) a reliable, efficient clock (Windows OS) without a superfluous radio (i.e., browser).
