Debate Over SAT

Share

One group of apologists opposes the SAT on the ground that minorities and poor people don’t have access to instruction in test-taking. The same group opposes President Bush’s plan for annual testing of students in the third through eighth grades. In other words, let’s continue to make “test-taking” an esoteric skill available only to the rich. Do I sense an agenda of obfuscation?

* I took the SAT in 1996. I remember it well. I had to read some passages and answer questions to make sure I understood what I had read. I answered some high school-level math problems. My vocabulary and understanding of grammar were evaluated. What’s the big problem with all that?
