Blue Light May Flash Again at Kmart

Associated Press

Kmart Corp. reportedly is resurrecting its blue-light special concept of in-store advertising for sales merchandise. Analysts say it may be the retailer’s ticket to catching up with rivals Target Corp. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Kmart was installing special billboards to announce the blue-light comeback. One sign featured a lighthouse casting a blue beam and a promise: “The blue light is back.” A Kmart spokeswoman declined to comment. The marketing concept, created in 1965, was retired in the 1990s. Although previous executives saw the blue light as a symbol of the past, the current team sees potential in using the company’s heritage. Kmart shares closed unchanged at $9.30 on the NYSE.
