Serb’s Hand-Over Is Set for Today
Former Yugoslav army chief Gen. Dragoljub Ojdanic will turn himself in to the U.N. tribunal in The Hague today to answer charges of war crimes in Kosovo in 1999, his lawyer said.
Vojislav Selezan said Wednesday that his client, who served under ousted Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic, was booked on the morning flight to the Netherlands, as the first of six suspects who have decided to report to the tribunal voluntarily.
Under intense financial pressure from the United States, Yugoslavia passed a law April 11 outlining procedures for the hand-over of suspects to the United Nations war crimes tribunal.
The U.S. State Department said Tuesday that it wanted to see those indicted by the tribunal travel to The Hague before it released financial aid. A list of 23 indictees was published by the government last week, six of whom said they would surrender.
