Fire Kills Two Children While Mother Is Away
A mother who left her two young children at home so she could go out with friends returned early Thursday to find her trailer engulfed in flames--and her two children dead, authorities said.
The fire occurred in the Mendocino County town of Redwood Valley, Sheriff Anthony Craver said.
The woman left the children, ages 4 and 5, in the care of her neighbor. The neighbor told authorities she checked on the sleeping kids at midnight.
By the time the mother got home at 1:30 a.m., the trailer was engulfed in flames. The blaze may have been started by an electrical space heater, Craver said.
