Jennifer Aniston strays far from the gang at Central Perk with an indie-film star turn as a put-upon Texas wife in the dark comedy “The Good Girl.” Bored with her job at the cosmetics counter at the local Retail Rodeo and fed up with her pothead, house-painter husband, Justine (Aniston) embarks on an initially giddy, clandestine affair with a younger, equally unhappy co-worker, that eventually takes a turn for the obsessive. Jake Gyllenhaal, John C. Reilly and Tim Blake Nelson co-star as the men who make her crazy. “Chuck & Buck’s” writer and director, Mike White and Miguel Arteta, respectively, re-team for this wry look at Middle America melancholia.

“The Good Girl,” rated R for sexuality, some language and drug content, opens Friday in selected theaters.

8:30pm Jazz

Two jazz legends arrive in Hollywood this weekend: Jimmy Smith and the Hammond B-3 organ. Smith got his first organ from a loan shark in 1953 and had it shipped to a warehouse in Norristown, Pa., where he and his father worked as plasterers. Smith, who already played piano, claims he stayed in that warehouse six months to a year learning to play his new “beast.” But he emerged with a new sound that would prove to be the standard for jazz organists for years to come.

8pm Pop Music

In the beginning there was a vinyl disc spinning on a turntable. Then in the 1970s came scratching--DJs moving a record back and forth on the turntable to create a new sound. This early chapter of hip-hop’s genesis is explored in Doug Pray’s documentary “Scratch,” which screens tonight at Grand Performances’ festival of hip-hop. DJs Haul & Mason, known for their work with the Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra, will do a set after the film. The full Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra will perform its organic beats, spoken word and jazz orchestrations in a live performance Friday.

“Scratch” and DJs Haul & Mason, 8 p.m., California Plaza, 350 S. Grand Ave., downtown L.A. Also, Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra, Friday, 8 p.m. Free. (213) 687-2159 or www.grandperformances.org.
