Swimming Pool Tax Subject of Recount

Ventura County elections officials today will conduct a recount of ballots cast by Fillmore voters in the March 5 election to verify that a tax proposal to support a new community pool did fail.

Measure Q would have assessed $15 a year on property owners to pay for maintaining a swimming pool to be built near Fillmore High School. The city’s old pool was shut down last year for health and safety reasons.

A majority of Fillmore voters favored Measure Q, but such tax measures require a two-thirds majority. The vote, according to certified results, fell just short with 65.7% support.

Officials will inspect ballots that earlier were counted by machines. The machines counted votes from 1,987 ballots and recorded 39 additional ballots as “undercounts,” on which voters did not make a choice for or against Measure Q.

Even if all 39 undercounts had voted for Measure Q, elections officials said, the measure likely would still fall short of the 1,351 favorable votes required.
