Taxpayers Pay for Off-the-Books Jobs
As employers provide off-the-books jobs, not only are millions of dollars in taxes and Social Security deposits lost, but the very people who participate in this illegal underground activity are the recipients of millions of dollars in health-care and welfare benefits [“Off-the-Books Jobs Growing in Region,” May 6].
Many are illegal immigrants who are not qualified for benefits. While their employers get cheap labor, the taxpayers are hit with the bill for services provided and, in effect, are subsidizing these penny-pinching employers.

“Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.” As areas of high illegal immigration grow, so does a culture of disregard for American law.
A downward spiral follows, affecting almost all areas as well as the quality of life until society starts to mirror the countries the immigrants left behind.
The longer Los Angeles and Congress wait to control immigration and enforce present laws, the harder the problem will be to solve.
