2 Embassies Warn Parents in Indonesia
The U.S. and Australian embassies on Friday warned that international schools in Indonesia were at risk of terrorist attack and told parents to consider keeping their children home.
The warnings cited “credible information.”
Most international schools closed in Jakarta, the capital, because of the warning.
“The [U.S.] Embassy has received credible information about possible targeting of schools in Jakarta associated with Western interests,” Friday’s announcement said.
It was relayed via e-mail to registered U.S. citizens living in Indonesia.
“American citizens should consider avoiding school attendance at this time,” the warning said. A similar warning was posted on the Australian Embassy Web site.
Among the schools that closed was the Jakarta International School, which is attended by hundreds of American children.
Since an attack on the Indonesian island of Bali on Oct. 12 that killed 191 people, most countries have urged their citizens living in Indonesia to exercise caution. Some nonessential staff members at the U.S. Embassy have left the country.
