Lecturers’ Ill Treatment Hurts Students Too

Share

Re “Ignore Walkout, UCI Chief Advises,” Oct. 12:

I am behind the lecturers 100%. They are crucial to the learning environment at UCI, but they are treated as if they are disposable. I do not understand why they have to reapply for their jobs every year, even every quarter. I have heard stories about excellent lecturers leading class for the fall quarter but suddenly disappearing the next quarter, and sometimes they never return.

Not only does this directly affect the lecturers, but it also directly influences the students when they have actually built a strong relationship with one of the lecturers. When the lecturers disappear, the relationship dies, and they can kiss that recommendation-letter-ticket to graduate school goodbye.
