Register by Monday to Vote in Nov. 5 Election

Monday is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 5 general election.

Who can register: U.S. citizens who are at least 18 by election day and a California resident for 15 days before the election. If you move within 15 days of the election, you can vote at your former precinct. Individuals who are in prison or on parole for a felony are ineligible.

Reasons to register or re-register:

* You have never registered.

* You have moved since the last election.

* You have changed your name.

* You want to change your party affiliation.

How and where to register: Registration-by-mail forms are available at most city halls, county offices, state Department of Motor Vehicles offices, fire stations, post offices, libraries, banks and some high schools and senior citizen centers.

For registration information, Los Angeles County residents can call the registrar-recorder/county clerk’s office at (562) 466-1310 or (562) 462-2260 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Absentee ballots: The last day to apply for an absentee ballot is Oct. 29. Applications are on the back page of sample ballots. They also may be obtained by writing to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office, Absent Voter Section, P.O. Box 30450, Los Angeles, CA 90030-0450, or in person at the registrar’s office, 12400 Imperial Highway, Norwalk. To be counted, the absentee ballot must be mailed in time to arrive in the registrar’s office by Nov. 5 or returned by the voter personally to any polling place in Los Angeles County no later than 8 p.m. on election day.

Touch-screen voting option: Voters can cast their ballots early via touch-screen voting Tuesday through Nov. 1 at 21 locations in Los Angeles County. Find the nearest location on the Web at www.lavote.net or call the registrar’s office at (800) 466-1310.
