New Zealand diplomats have apologized to Washington after Prime Minister Helen Clark said the war with Iraq would not be occurring if Al Gore were in the White House.

“I judged in the end that because things had been read into the comment which I never intended, there was something to put right and I’ve done that,” Clark said today.

Her comments riled diplomats in New Zealand last week. In what was interpreted as a rebuke, the U.S. Embassy called the remarks “regrettable.”
