S.B. County Alters Form of Balloting
After using punch-card ballots for nearly 40 years, San Bernardino County residents will for the first time mark their votes on optical scan ballots in the gubernatorial recall election scheduled for October.
The county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a $450,000 contract with a company to print 700,000 ballots each for the Oct. 7 recall election and an election in November.
The contract also includes mailing services for absentee ballots in both elections.
Scott Konopasek, the county’s registrar of voters, said using optical scan ballots, which voters mark with a pencil, for both elections provides a transition period for poll workers and voters before the county switches to a new electronic voting system. By early next year, touch-screen ballots will be installed in county voting booths.
