Security Is Tightened Before Kashmir Vote

Thousands of security personnel set up roadblocks, checked cars and frisked travelers in the Indian-held portion of Kashmir ahead of parliamentary elections this week.
The tightened security comes after Islamic rebels in Jammu and Kashmir state ordered residents to boycott Monday’s elections and vowed to step up attacks on campaigners, voters and election officials.
More than a dozen rebel groups have been fighting since 1989 for Kashmir’s independence from India or its merger with Muslim-majority Pakistan.
