Connecticut Governor Faces Inquiry
Connecticut lawmakers voted unanimously Monday to set up a panel to investigate whether to impeach Gov. John G. Rowland after he accepted gifts and free work from state contractors, and then lied about it.
The Connecticut House of Representatives voted 140 to 0 to begin an investigation of the Republican governor.
Although Rowland has not been accused of doing anything in exchange for the free work, Republican and Democratic lawmakers, including a longtime friend, U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, have urged him to quit.
The governor, whose administration is also the focus of a federal corruption investigation, has refused to leave office, prompting lawmakers to act.
Monday’s vote established a 10-member committee to determine whether sufficient grounds exist to impeach Rowland.
