Barricaded Man Delays Mortuary Rites
A man threatening to kill himself, his girlfriend and police barricaded himself in a second-story Anaheim apartment early Monday, forcing the delay of a memorial service at the funeral parlor below, police said.
Michael Patrick O’Hare, 34, of Santa Ana was booked at Orange County Jail on suspicion of corporeal injury, false imprisonment and resisting arrest, said Anaheim Police Sgt. Rick Martinez. O’Hare is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
He forced a four-hour standoff with police from the apartment above Hilgenfeld Mortuary at 120 E. Broadway, Martinez said. Officers responding to a disturbance call at 6:15 a.m. said the man was locked in the apartment.
Martinez said O’Hare had assaulted his girlfriend and might have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The girlfriend, who ran to safety, lives in the apartment and is a mortuary employee.
Police subdued O’Hare by firing beanbags filled with pepper at him when he went onto the roof at 10:10 a.m., Martinez said. O’Hare was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries and arrested.
A service at Hilgenfeld Mortuary was delayed an hour because of the standoff, said owner Margie Field.
