Man Shot in Consulate Hostage Incident Dies
A 19-year-old man who held a female clerk at the Mexican Consulate hostage before being shot by police died Saturday, authorities said.
Manuel Jubenal Ortiz-Gonzalez was pronounced dead shortly before 2 p.m. after his family decided to take him off life support, a coroner’s official said.
Ortiz-Gonzalez, originally from Mexico, entered the consulate Tuesday with what appeared to be a pistol, grabbed the pregnant woman and dragged her into the street.
An LAPD sergeant shot Ortiz-Gonzalez in the head as he held the woman around the neck and pointed a gun at her head.
The suspect’s gun turned out to be a starter pistol.
