From Times Wire Reports

A two-year struggle to come up with a new federal highway spending bill was extended for two more days as an agreement continued to elude House and Senate negotiators.

For the ninth time since the six-year law expired in September 2003, Congress approved a stopgap extension to ensure that programs aren’t interrupted and that highway officials keep getting paid.

This time, with an agreement within reach, the extension approved by voice vote in the House and Senate was for only two days.

Past spending extensions have generally been for weeks or months.
