Rockies Get Past Pirates
Joe Kennedy won on the road for the first time this season, and the Colorado Rockies, helped by an uncharacteristically sloppy Pittsburgh defense, beat the Pirates, 4-3, Sunday for only their third road victory this season.
Pirate center fielder Tike Redman dropped a routine flyball by Kennedy that would have ended the fourth inning but instead helped the Rockies to the first of consecutive two-run innings.
The error was Pittsburgh’s first in 95 innings over 11 games and cost the Pirates, who are second in the league in team defense, a chance to set a club record with 11 consecutive errorless games.
Kennedy (3-4) had been ineffective on the road, going 0-4 with an 8.31 earned-run average, but he limited the Pirates to five hits and three runs -- two earned -- over 8 1/3 innings.
