Ex-Finance Minister Claims Election Victory

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, a former finance minister and Harvard graduate, claimed victory in Liberia’s presidential election as she took a large lead in the balloting. She is poised to become the first elected female leader in Africa.
Her rival, former international soccer star George Weah, refused to concede defeat and maintained his allegations of fraud. With 91% of the ballots counted, Johnson-Sirleaf had 59% of the vote and Weah had less than 41%, the National Electoral Commission said.
