Soldier Pleads Guilty in Drug Smuggling Scheme

A soldier stationed in Colombia as part of the war on drugs was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty in a scheme to smuggle cocaine into the U.S. using military planes.
Army Staff Sgt. Kelvin Irizarry-Melendez, 26, pleaded guilty at Ft. Bliss to conspiracy, wrongful importation of cocaine and a charge related to taking money to Colombia. His rank was reduced to private, and he will receive a dishonorable discharge.
