Group’s Suit Seeks to Halt Judges’ Extra Pay
The Washington, D.C.-based conservative legal group Judicial Watch has filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles County that seeks to halt a practice that allows judges duplicate benefits and perks.
The lawsuit was prompted by a 2000 Los Angeles Times story that said that county officials allow judges to earn about $38,000 a year above their base salary of $143,000 through cash allowances for benefits and perks already provided by the state.
In a statement, Superior Court Presiding Judge William A. MacLaughlin said the suit was similar to others and that “beyond that, the court cannot comment” because ethics “preclude discussion of any pending litigation.”
