An unforgettable gift to her teacher

Share

Re “A Pandora’s box for teachers,” Dec. 19

This article brought back a sweet memory. In my first year of teaching, I taught a fourth-grade class next to a housing project. The students in our school were very poor, but the children, though we all encouraged them not to, still brought presents to their teachers. They were simple gifts; most were handmade with love. But the one I will never forget came from a little girl from a family I knew was among the most destitute. Her gift to me was a banana, tied with a colorful ribbon and bow. I will always remember that little girl and the smile on her face when she shyly presented her gift to me.
