A 67-year-old Spanish woman became the world’s oldest new mother Saturday when she gave birth to twins, a Barcelona hospital said.

The woman, whose name was not released, became pregnant after receiving in vitro fertilization treatment in Latin America and gave birth by caesarean section, a hospital official said.

Both the woman, from the southern Spanish region of Andalusia, and the babies were in good health, the official said, although the newborns had been placed in an incubator. The hospital declined to specify the gender of the babies.

The woman, giving birth for the first time, is a year older than Romanian Adriana Iliescu, who had a baby girl in January 2005 at the age of 66. She had been pregnant with twins, but one was stillborn.
