Canada’s Leader Says Border Plan a Worry
Canada’s prime minister told President Bush he was worried about a planned U.S. border crackdown, saying that if the United States becomes more closed off to its friends, “then the terrorists have won.”
Stephen Harper, on his first White House visit since his Conservatives won the Jan. 23 election, said he feared that a law passed by Congress would harm trade between the neighbors.
The law -- designed to deter terrorist attacks -- says that beginning in 2008, people crossing the border must carry passports or other secure documents. Canada wants the law to be watered down and delayed.
