Body of Infant Found Near Train Tracks
The body of a newborn girl was found wrapped in two white grocery bags near railroad tracks in Alhambra on Sunday, police said.
Police said the death was being investigated as a homicide.
The body was found about 12:34 p.m. by Union Pacific employees inspecting the tracks, according to Sgt. Kean Oda of the Alhambra Police Department. He said the baby appeared to be a few hours old and the umbilical cord was still attached.
The rail lines, used by commercial freight trains, are about 40 feet below street level, Oda said. Investigators believe the infant was thrown over a chain-link fence onto the tracks from Front Street, at the edge of a residential neighborhood about eight miles east of Los Angeles.
Police used search dogs to comb the area, Oda said.
The L.A. County coroner’s office said the child weighed 4 to 5 pounds and was born alive.
